Dr. S. M. Baugh
Associate Professor of New Testament
Westminster Theological Seminary in California
Steve Baugh was born in a small town in Oregon where he lived until
joining the U. S. Navy in 1973. In his fourth year of military service, Baugh was
converted to Christ and returned to college at the University of Oregon where he
earned two bachelor's degrees in telecommunications and in classics. (He says that
he found a 2-for-1 coupon in the newspaper!) Baugh served as campus president of
the U. of O. InterVarsity chapter and eventually became a member at Oak Hill OPC
in Eugene.
In 1982, Steve and his wife, Kathy, moved to Escondido to attend the new campus of
Westminster Theological Seminary. He graduated in 1985 with the M.Div. and soon enrolled
in a Ph.D. program in ancient history at the University of California, Irvine, which
he completed in 1990 working on the historical background of the apostle Paul. In
the meantime, Dr. Baugh had been teaching at Westminster in Greek and Hebrew, and
in 1991 he was appointed to teach New Testament.
Dr. Baugh has been interested in Covenant Theology for some time, but his interest
was recently rekindled when he offered an elective class on the subject at Westminster
along with his colleague, Dr. R. Scott Clark, whose dissertation at Oxford University
was on the history of Covenant Theology in the sixteenth century. Dr. Baugh hopes
to contribute to the biblical foundation of Covenant Theology in the near future
with a book on the theology of the Book of Hebrews. He has published two textbooks
on New Testament Greek and written essays in books and scholarly journals on various
topics including divine foreknowledge, predestination, and the women's ordination
issue. He is currently writing a commentary on the Pastoral Epistles. Dr. Baugh serves
as a council member of the national Council
of Biblical Manhood and Womanhood and is a ministerial
member of the Presbytery of Southern California of the OPC.
Steve and Kathy Baugh have three children: Stephanie Grace (10), Leah Hope (8), and
Isaac Christopher Michael (3), and he and Kathy have been married since 1980. They
currently live in Valley Center with a big garden, a variety of fruit trees, two
cats, and untold numbers of gophers (many of the latter soon to be deceased).
Dr. Baugh spoke on the following:
- 1. What is Covenant Theology?
2. A Short History of Covenant Theology.
3. Covenant and Salvation: "I will be your God, and you will be My People."
4. The Sacraments as Covenant Events.
5. The Covenant in Church and Family.
